A Study of the Life of JOHN WESLEY and Some Members of the Family MARJORIE BOWEN has come neither to judge nor to explain. Religious controversy and theology she avoids, being content to give her readers the fullest portrait of the man to be attempted in our time, and leave the rest to them. HERE, then, stands John Wesley, a titan with the message that set England afire. FIRST we see him as the fifteenth child of a Rector, whose stipend was £30 a year. Here is the mother who formed him, his brothers, his unfortunate sisters, and his haunted home. HERE also is the "Holy Club" at Oxford, that first step towards his real destiny. THEN comes the adventure in Georgia, where he knew love, only to turn away for religions sake. AT last the real drama in England begins. The biographer is straining every nerve to keep pace with this tearing torrent of evangelical revival. WE see the great crowds following in the open spaces, we hear the singing, the shouting, here are the "love feasts" and the "watch nights" with a vengeance. IMPOSSIBLE to imagine our quiet England stirred to such depths. THE crusade in the West, where Bristol is as seething a cauldron as London. . . . Forty-two visits to Ireland, twenty-two to Scotland . . . thus the magic years roll on . . . nor can old age overtake this man who dies in his eighty-eighth year, as active in his work as ever. 40 Faith-building Lessons From History "Poignant vignettes from history are captured in fascinating word pictures. Chapters open with Scripture that is fleshed out in the lives of historical figures. A Story of Border Life Among the Indians Indians, Frenchmen, Englishmen, wars, strained friendships, and romance are all interwoven in Eliza Pollards fast paced historical novel. When Charles Langlade deserted his birth place in upper Canada to marry an Indian squaw and then to fight with his Indian tribe for the French against the English, he also lost his best friend, Roger Boscowen, who led his rangers for the English against the French. Meanwhile the historically famous General Louis de Montcalm entered Canada on behalf of the French and things took a turn in favour for the French due to the help of Langlade. But would the jealous government of French Canada succeed in using De Montcalms daughter Mercedes who had come with her father from France with the intention to enter a Canadian convent to destroy Montcalms fame? And would Charles and Roger indeed fight each other? Would their friendship ever be restored? Time: 1754-1760 Age: 13-99 ISBN 978-1-894666-31-2 US$17.90 |
or, The Winning of a Continent by G.A. Henty Through misadventure the hero of the story, James Walsham, becomes involved in the historic struggle between Britain and France for supremacy on the North American continent. The issue of this war determined not only the destinies of North America, but to a large extent those of the mother countries themselves. With Wolfe in Canada will take the reader through many battles of this conflict. Meet a young George Washington and General Braddock as they fight the French and Indians, join up with Rogers' Rangers, and learn of the legendary generals Wolfe and Montcalm. With Wolfe in Canada is a model of what a children's book should be with its moving tale of military exploit and thrilling adventure. This classic provides a lesson in history instructively and graphically, whilst infusing into the dead facts of history new life. "Mr. Washington and who is Mr. Washington?" "It is the Governor of Virginia's envoy, Monsieur bearing a letter from his Excellency." St. Pierre gave his inferior officer a quick glance; two things occurred to him: the first was that Dinwiddie must be serious if he had sent a messenger in such weather; the second was that it would have been more courteous if the envoy had been a man of some rank; he remarked on neither of these things, but quietly requested that Mr. Washington should be brought into his presence. The scene was St. Pierre's room in the newly erected Fort le Buf; December cold filled the apartment despite the huge fire of logs that roared on the hearth; and the view from the window was of a frozen lake, great trees against a drab sky, and the steady falling of snowflakes. or, The Mountain Fugitive by M.J. Porchat Huguenot Inheritance Series #16 Germain was a stout lad of sixteen; Madeleine was two years younger, and possessed of all the delicacy of her gender, as Germain was of the strength of his. They wore a more serious and thoughtful air than is usual at their age. Three cows, a goat, and a dozen sheep were feeding around them; and while the other animals browsed the grass without taking any notice of their keepers, the goat, more sociable, looked at them from time to time, spoke to them in a friendly bleat, and without interrupting her feeding, gradually drew nearer to the girl; who, finding her at length within her reach, laid aside her knitting to caress her. Germain had a book open upon his knees; but he had stopped reading, and remained pensive, as if unconscious of everything near him. The sun, which had just broken through the mist, was lighting up the landscape, like a friend who is trying to invite a smile. Journeys of David Thompson (1784-1812) Edited by Joseph B. Tyrell David Thompson was likely the greatest Canadian. That was only possible because of his faith in God. Actually he wrote this book himself, though the first 100 pages an overview of Thompsons life and itinerary, are by the editor, Joseph B. Tyrell. Thompson wrote: I was obliged to take two kegs of alcohol, overruled by my partners, for I had made it a law to myself, that no alcohol should pass the mountains in my company, and thus be clear of the sad sight of drunkenness, and its many evils. But these gentlemen insisted upon alcohol being the most profitable article that could be taken for the Indian trade. In this I knew they had miscalculated. Accordingly when we came to the defiles of the mountains, I placed the two kegs of alcohol on a vicious horse, and by noon the kegs were empty, and in pieces, the horse rubbing his load against the rocks to get rid of it. I wrote to my partners what I had done; and that I would do the same to every keg of alcohol, and for the next six years that I had charge of the fur trade on the west side of the mountains, no further attempt was made to introduce spirituous liquors. DVD American Jesuits The History of Jesuitism in America American Jesuits may be one of the most important documentaries ever produced concerning the social and political conflicts in America today. The influence of Rome in America is one that was written about extensively by authors throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century, with many warnings about a hidden plan by foreign powers to enslave the country. Nevertheless, most modern history books have been carefully rewritten to remove critical information that would likely warn the people about what has been happening behind the scenes for more than 200 years. Is it just a coincidence that many key figures in power today (Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dr. Anthony Fauci, to name a few) are either directly or indirectly associated with the Roman Catholic Jesuit Order? And what will be the ultimate influence of this notorious society, which has been expelled from at least 83 countries, city-states and cities around the world? The influence of the Vatican and her Jesuit priests is the key to understanding globalism, social justice, illegal immigration, the LGBT agenda, Black Lives Matter, the infiltration of Islam and Sharia law, Covid-19, and much more. This documentary covers the history of Jesuitism in America and the diabolical influence of the order into modern times. Subject: Jesuits Age: 12-99 DVD-IP20884 US$24.95 |

A Tale of the Time of the First Napoleon As, with a hand still trembling, Clémence poured out the tea, she remembered the stories she had heard of such evening visits made by the Czar, "to talk at his ease," and recalled the words of De Maistre when someone criticised this habit in his presence: "It is a touching thing to me to see the ruler of a great empire, in the age of all the passions, find his recreation in taking a cup of tea with an honest man and his wife." Ivan Ivanovitch Pojarsky, an orphaned Russian Prince, adopted by loyal people in the village of Nicolofsky meets the great Czar Alexander of Russia while the Czar does his best to bring back to life a seemingly dead carpenter. This historical fact, and many others related in this captivating story, gives a very accurate picture of the life in Russia during the time of Napoleon. Little Henry and His Bearer first appeared in 1814. The unprecedented favour with which it was received by the public may be judged from the fact that more than 250,000 copies of this edition were sold. It was written by Mrs. Sherwood, the wife of a Christian officer in the service of the East India Company. In the year 1866 another, and still better, edition was published. It is from that edition that the present reprint is made. In the 1866 edition both parts are replete with Hindustani words and expressions which render it attractive to those who knew the India of a century ago. But times have changed greatly since then, so old spelling has been altered and Hindustani words given their equivalent in English; while here and there a few minor alterations in the text seemed desirable to abbreviate it or render it clearer to a reader of today. The book has been so blessed to great numbers and is so glorifying to God that it is hoped that the reprinting of it may be used by Him to bring yet many others to trust in the Saviour. HENRY E. by Marian M. Schoolland This book appeared as a serial story in The Banner. It covers in short the history of The Netherlands from Roman times, through the Reformations of 1517 and 1834, to the emigration to America of the Pioneers in De Kolonie (original title of this book) in the Holland region in Michigan. Marian Schoolland is one of the first Reformed women in North America to devote a career to writing, and is one of the first women writers to have appeared on the pages of The Banner. She began writing for the Young Peoples page of The Banner and for the Sunday school papers in about 1938. She lived along the Thornapple River near Cascade, Michigan, for many years. She also spent five years in a cabin on Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. Before devoting her life to writing, she taught in some Christian elementary schools of Grand Rapids and at Calvin College for five years. "Gods providence works mediately; God raises up men to carry out His will and to do His work upon earth. When there is a great task to be done, a difficult and important work, He raises up great men to perform it men of faith, courage and endurance, God-fearing men, men who can lead and direct, who can bear and forbear; men who are not inflated by praise, nor discouraged by criticism, nor disheartened by seeming failure . . . A historical novel about the pioneers who established the Reformed community in Holland, Michigan. The immigrants who constituted "the colony" went forth to sow. They purposed to sow, rather than to reap. They purposed to sow, though it must be with tears, in order that the generations to come might reap with rejoicing. It is the history of their sowing, of their labor and suffering, their ideals and their faith, that has inspired the story which follows in this book. Many of the people who walk its pages are fictitious, but Van Raalte, Brummelkamp, the Americans who so nobly aided the colonists, and others were men who grappled with the problems of life of about a hundred years ago and helped make the history of our country. And the events of my story are, almost without exception, based upon the accumulated records of those pioneer days. ISBN 978-1-77298-180-3 US$ 18.90 |
by Thea Van Halsema Twenty men in Sunday black suits were in the church. It was a small church, made of logs. Eighteen of the men sat in the straight wood benches of the church. They sat together, in the front near the pulpit. One man stood up, facing the men in the benches. The other man sat at a table with a quill pen in his hand and a stack of papers before him. The twenty men wore their Sunday black suits, but it was not Sunday. Wednesday it was, an April Wednesday. The men were ministers and elders from nine churches. They had traveled over muddy spring roads in their horsedrawn carriages to the log church in the town of Zeeland for an all-day meeting. It was an important meeting, a meeting of the classis. Twice a year the men met as a classis to decide the affairs of the churches, the churches in western Michigan which called themselves Reformed. ISBN 978-1-928136-72-9 US$ 13.90

by Leonora Scholte John E. Marshall in The Banner of Truth: This is a delightful book. It tells the story of H.P. Scholte, a preacher in The Netherlands, who being persecuted for his faith in his own country, emigrated to the U.S.A., and there established a settlement in Pella, Iowa, in the midst of the vast undeveloped prairie. . . The greater part of the book is taken up in telling the stories of the immense hardships known after emigration. Interwoven with this story is an account of Scholte's marriage and family life. . . It is a most heartwarming and instructive story. Time: 1825-1880 Age: 14-99 ISBN 0-921100-01-9 US$11.90 |

A fascinating story about Dutch Settlers in Western Michigan of the Van Raalte colony of 1847 In the middle of the 19th century a band of Dutch immigrants, under the leadership of the Reverend A. C. Van Raalte, came to Michigan to establish their homes in a place now called Holland. Among these early pioneers were Gerrit Kolf, his wife, and four children. Food was scarce those first few months, but the Kolf family were often supplied meat or corn meal by a mysterious, solitary individual who wore a bearskin cloak and who refused conversation with anyone. To read this book is to gain an appreciation of the unconsciously heroic attitude of these people in their new and difficult life. The wildness of the country, the meagreness of their resources, and the lack of medical care make it at first a sheer struggle for survival. ISBN 978-1-928136-33-0 19th Century US$11.90 |
author of Coronation of Glory Willy-Jane VanDyken in The Trumpet: This romantic novel is so filled with excitement and drama, it is difficult to put it down once one has begun it. Its pages reflect the struggle between choosing Satan's ways or God's ways. Mary's struggles with materialism, being a submissive wife, coping with the criticism of others, learning how to deal with sickness and death of loved ones, trusting in God and overcoming the fear of death forces the reader to reflect on his own struggles in life. This story of Mary Ann Patten (remembered for being the first woman to take full command of a merchant sailing ship) is one that any teen or adult reader will enjoy. It will perhaps cause you to shed a few tears but it is bound to touch your heart and encourage you in your faith. Time: 1837-1861 Age: 14-99 ISBN 0-921100-79-5 US$14.90 Cloth edition US$24.90 |
The Unabridged Reprint of the Revised and Complete Edition of 1914 Charles Chiniquy, noted author of Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, was converted to Jesus Christ after serving in the Roman Catholic priesthood for twenty-five years. As a priest he earned the confidence and love of the people and special marks of approbation and favour from his superiors (including the Supreme Pontiff). For reasons drawn from the Word of God he withdrew from the Church of Rome, publicly renouncing her distinctive dogmas. As a faithful minister of the Gospel he suffered many trials at the hand of the Adversary, narrowly escaping death on several occasions. As a soldier of the Cross he warred a good warfare for the King of kings and Lord of lords. In his ninetieth year Charles Chiniquy peacefully fell asleep in Jesus, after faithfully serving "Forty Years in the Church of Christ." A Story of the Nineteenth Century This was scarcely as bad as she expected, yet quite bad enough. She flushed hotly. "Uncle has not said anything to you, has he?" she asked. "Never once. Kate, Uncle Morris is a brick!" There was a wealth of genuine gratitude flung into the boyish word that redeemed it from all trace of vulgarity. "If Father were alive, what would he say?" questioned Kate. "I think he would be horrified at the very thought." "Well, I dont know," mused Archie, thrusting his hands into his pockets. An unabridged reprint of the Fifth Edition of 1903 James Chalmers, the missionary, was a remarkable man from every point of view. His personality attracted every one who met him. The mere narrative of his actions and experiences reads like a romance. Hence it is not surprising that in the course of a few months three large editions should have been exhausted. One gratifying feature has been the hearty welcome accorded to the book by all sections of the Protestant Church, and by all kinds of papers in the press of Great Britain, the Colonies, and the United States. Papers that rarely devote a line to missionary intelligence have exhorted their readers to get this book because it is more interesting than any novel and the official organs of bodies as widely sundered in some respects as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, the Church Missionary Society, the United Free Church of Scotland, and the Baptist Missionary Society, have urged their readers to study this volume, and from it refresh their missionary knowledge and missionary enthusiasm. The Wounded Soldiers Friend The Best of our Library # 7 Wherever Florence went the same glad welcome awaited her. Hers was a familiar presence in the poor cottages around her home, especially when there was sickness or trouble therein; sometimes in the company of the vicar of the parish, who had studied medicine, and from whom her first notions of hygiene were derived; sometimes as her mothers almoner, taking food and clothes to those who stood in need; but what they valued perhaps more even than the material gifts she brought was the gentle presence, the delicate touch of the childs hand on the aching head, the serious face so full of sympathy, and the soft voice speaking words of encouragement and hope. "A Ministering Angel," even while she still stood on the threshold of life, her childs soul was touched by the pains and sorrows of those around her. The Life of George Leslie Mackay of Formosa (Taiwan) The Best of our Library # 8 "Why, he speaks our words!" they all cried at once. As they stood staring, Mackay took out his watch and held it up for them to see. It glittered in the sun, and at the sight of it and the kind smiling face above, they lost their fears and crowded around him. They examined the watch in great wonder. They handled his clothes, exclaimed over the buttons on his coat, and inquired what they were for. They felt his hands and his fingers, and finally decided that, in spite of his queer looks, he was after all a man. From that day the young missionary and the herd-boys were great friends. Every day he joined them in the buffalo pasture, and would spend from four to five hours with them. And as they were very willing to talk, he not only learned their language rapidly, but also learned much about their homes, their schools, their customs, and their religion. A Tale of the Ottawa The winter had broken early and the Scotch River was running ice-free and full from bank to bank. There was still snow in the woods, and with good sleighing and open rivers, every day was golden to the lumbermen who had logs to get down to the big water. A day gained now might save weeks at a chute farther down, where the rafts would crowd one another and strive for right of way. Dan Murphy was mightily pleased with himself and the bit of the world about him, for there lay his winters cut of logs in the river below him snug and secure and held tight by a boom across the mouth, just where it flowed into the Nation. In a few days he would have his crib made, and his outfit ready to start for the Ottawa mills. He was sure to be ahead of the big timber rafts that took up so much space, and whose crews with unbearable effrontery considered themselves the aristocrats of the river. Yes, it was a pleasant and satisfying sight, some three solid miles of logs boomed at the head of the big water. Time: Canadian Fiction in the 1800s Age: 14-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-147-6 US$22.90
A Story of Early Days in Glengarry There was a deep silence. All eyes were turned upon the master. "I think Hughie was first," he said, slowly. A great sigh swept over the school, and then a wave of applause. The master held up his hand. "But it was so very nearly a tie, that if Hughie is willing " "All right, Sir," cried Hughie, eager for more fight. But Thomas, in sullen rage, strode to his seat muttering, "I was just as soon anyway." Every one heard and waited, looking at the master. "The match is over," said the master, quietly. Great disappointment showed in every face. "There is just one thing better than winning, and that is, taking defeat like a man." His voice was grave, and with just a touch of sadness. The children, sensitive to moods, as is the characteristic of children, felt the touch and sat subdued and silent. Time: Canadian Fiction in the 1800s Age: 14-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-183-4 US$16.90

This morning when I awoke, I found myself in complete darkness, and at first supposed that my sleep had quitted me at an earlier hour than usual. However, I heard my grandfather feeling his way about, and I rubbed my eyes, but did not see a bit better."Grandfather," said I, "you are up before daylight.""My dear boy," he answered, " if we were to wait for the light of day, we should remain long enough in bed. I fear the snow is above the window."At this I uttered a cry of horror and leaped out of bed. I soon lighted our lamp, and we were then able to perceive that my grandfathers conjecture was well-founded."But the window is low," he added, "besides, it may be that the snow has been heaped up in this part; perhaps we should not see it above two feet deep at some paces from the wall." by Henszen Veenland The publishers second most favourite juvenile story! Bill was a hunter for years he had lived in this region. He knew it like the back of his hand. He had seen the town develop. Back in the day, when the first gold discoveries had been made and prospectors had flocked here from all over. Poor and covetous. They had stored their huts and their encampments near their claims: the pieces of land which each had managed to reserve for himself to search there for the coveted yellow metal. Especially the early years had been rough and harsh: the dwellings were far from comfortable; the goldminers were forced to hunt themselves if they wanted to eat meat; and grain and other food was rarely brought in. It was very expensive, so that often the proceeds of weeks of work at the sites had to be given in order to obtain good food. Gradually this had improved. Or rather: changed. Bill had not found much improvement. There were a few stores which had some stock and which because they were competing with each other did not charge very high prices. But there were also pubs, and that was certainly not an improvement. Subject: Fiction set in 1870s Age: 10-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-182-7 US$12.90 |
A Novel by C.C. Bergius A best-seller in Germany and one of the most widely acclaimed novels to be published there for many years, The Noble Forger is founded on historical fact and set in Austria during the early part of the nineteenth century. The story opens with the arrest of Peter von Baton, one of the wealthiest and most influential aristocrats in Vienna, and his wife, the former Countess Christalnigg, on a charge of forgery which caused a scandal that threatened to disturb the very foundations of the Austrian State. Emperor Franz, haunted by the spectre of a revolution which could be sparked off by such a sensational exposure of aristocratic venality, ordered the powerful Prince Metternich to investigate the circumstances leading to the von Batons arrest. A trial would be held . . . The book is a novel based on fact; that is, the events described in it have actually happened. A Tale on Armenia in the 19th century Alcock has provided sufficient graphics describing the atrocities committed against the Armenian Christians to make the reader emotionally moved by the intense suffering these Christians endured at the hands of Muslim Turks and Kurds. At the same time, the author herself has confessed to not wanting to provide full detail, which would take away from the focus on how those facing death did so with peace, being confident they would go to see their LORD, and so enjoy eternal peace. As such it is not only an enjoyable novel, but also encouraging reading. These Christians were determined to remain faithful to their God, regardless of the consequences. The Life of the Venerable John Alcock (Late Archdeacon of Waterford) "John," said his father, calling him one day to his side, "what would you like to be?" "A doctor, Sir," was the prompt reply of the doctors son, who shared the family esprit de corps to the uttermost. "I was born a doctor, of a family of doctors," he often said afterward. "Well, Ben and Nat are going to be doctors; I think you had better be a clergyman," was the disappointing answer. Time: 1804-1886 Age: 16-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-023-3 US$21.90
(Deborah Alcock) Her Life and Works by Elisabeth Boyd Bayly "ONLY remembered by what I have done." That will never be true of Deborah Alcock. Partly because the unknown cannot be remembered, and year after year her books came out the first by "D. A.," the next "By the Author of" the one or more before it, until the wide success of The Spanish Brothers stamped its name, without her own, on all she wrote; and for twenty years longer she went on writing stories which left their impress on innumerable lives, while the writers identity remained strangely unknown outside the quiet little city in the South of Ireland where her best years were spent. In 1890 The Story of Constance came out in serial form, and was afterwards continued and published under the title of Crushed yet Conquering, "by Deborah Alcock." In 1891, at the age of fifty-six a lone woman, deeply bereaved Miss Alcock came to England, and to her astonishment "found herself famous." And still her new friends, like the old ones, said, "She is greater than her books though we loved them so well." More than by her writings or her gracious acts by what she was will she be remembered, in life and in eternity, by those whose privilege it was to know her. Canadas Deep-Sea Sailors Canadian Inheritance Series # 1 The Salt-Water Men is a tale of great captains and great seamen. They were Canadians, or they sailed in ships Canadians had built, and most of their names have been forgotten, even in the ports from which their tall-masted vessels put out. But now Joseph Schull has brought these iron men in their wooden ships to life again. Here is James Smith who built the Marco Polo at Saint John, New Brunswick, and Bully Forbes who sailed her ("the fastest ship in the world" ) and wore her name on his tombstone when he died. Here is W.D. Lawrence and his son in-law, Jim Ellis of Shubenacadie, and the mighty W.D. Lawrence, "the largest sailing ship afloat." This is the story of these men, and others like them who came late to the age of sail with the new age of steel and steam advancing on them even as they began their brief career on blue water. Yet they had time to forge into the front ranks of the worlds seamen, and to make the name of "Blue-nose" famous on every sea. Shipbuilders and shipmasters, they were sharp business men, and they were sometimes tough and brutal sailors. But they knew their trade and they loved it, and we shall not see their like again. This is their story, against a background of storm and shipwreck, drownings and disasters, and triumphs over the cruel sea. The Story of Young Radisson Canadian Inheritance Series # 2 His full name was Pierre Esprit Radisson. His parents had crossed the ocean from France in 1651 to settle in the new village of Three Rivers. Outside the palisades of this village, an Indian war raged. Pierre was sixteen years old when he was captured by a Mohawk band while out hunting. The word Mohawk meant man-eater, and young Radisson knew he was at the mercy of one of the most-feared Iroquois tribes. He was adopted by the Mohawks, saved from death by his courage. In the time he lived with them, he gained a knowledge of their ways that served him well in future years. It kept him alive when his first escape attempt failed, and helped him to make his next escape successful. He spent a year in France, and returned to join a settlement in the heart of Iroquois country. The Indians had plotted a massacre of the settlers, and it was Radissons awareness of Mohawk customs, combined with his calculated bravery, that deprived them of their victims. Then began Radissons boldest venture, a journey up the Ottawa River to Lake Superior. At that time, the Iroquois strangle-hold on the Ottawa with war canoes on the river, and forts built at almost every major portage had reduced the fur trade from the interior to a trickle. Radisson and his brother-in-law Groseilliers broke through the blockade twice, once going up-river, and again when they returned with a magnificent cargo of furs. On the shores of Lake Superior Pierre Radisson first saw the prime beaver pelts brought overland from the Cree Indians of the north. He conceived the idea of trading directly with the Cree through Hudson Baya stroke of imagination that shaped the future of Canada. In this true story of a remarkable fighter and explorer, C.T. Ritchie carries the reader with rare skill from one thrilling incident to the next. The atmosphere of earliest times is conveyed with vivid exactness. The Story of Champlain Canadian Inheritance Series # 3 "Bring back a full report" King Henri of France said to Samuel Champlain. Three months later, Champlain followed the path of Cartier up the River of Canada to the place that the Indians called Kebek and which Champlain noted in his report as Quebec. There began the story of Champlain, a record of unequalled sacrifice and devotion to duty, here told with a fine sense of colour and drama. In this story Champlain is seen to be something more than a courageous adventurer. He emerges as a visionary of proud spirit, with resources of integrity and a depth of faithfulness that made him respected even by his enemies. Perhaps his greatest enemy was the Indian, the Iroquois. To fall into their hands meant an end more terrible than death. In alliance with the friendly but unpredictable Montagnais and Algonquins, Champlain fought the Iroquois, sailing into the heart of their country, seeking them out, attacking their fleets of war canoes and storming their forts. To make the River of Canada, later the St. Lawrence, safe for the canoes of the fur traders, Champlain suffered wounds from the arrows of the Iroquois . . . by Samuel B. Steele Reminiscences of the great Northwest, with some account of his service in South Africa Canadian Inheritance Series # 4 We had the detestable prohibitory liquor law to enforce, an insult to a free people. Our powers under it were so great, in fact so outrageous, that no self-respecting member of the corps, unless directly ordered, cared to exert them to the full extent. We were expected, on the slightest grounds of suspicion, to enter any habitation without a warrant, at any hour of the day or night, and search for intoxicants; no privacy need be respected. Yet, owing to the pressure of a lot of fanatics who neither knew nor cared to understand the situation, parliament would not repeal the law . . . Island of Peace Series #1 A Real Canadian Story "Youll break a leg and lie for days before anyone knows you are hurt," said Cousin John. "Youll be snowed in and no one will find you until spring," said Brother Henry. "You are a city woman and not strong. What do you know of a pioneers life? It is the most foolish plan we ever heard of," chorused all. Descending from prophecy to argument, they continued: "Of course you will have a telephone." "That I will not," I answered. "I have been jerked at the end of a telephone wire for years. I want rest." "At least you will have a good dog. That will be some protection." "A dog would drive away all the wild things. I want to study them," I objected. Time: 1914-1915 Age: 12-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-186-5 US$12.90
Island of Peace Series #2 An Other Real Canadian Story Three years, three long war years, have passed since we last saw this beloved land, and remembered with longing it had grown to seem but a dream island; but it is real, there it lies unchanged and there it waits, serene and beautiful, and the long war years seem now the dream instead. Along the shore great clumps of iris wave us welcome, royal in purple and gold. Nearer we come and nearer until the canoe slides along the side of a swaying dock and we step ashore. For very joy I long to kneel in the little trail that winds uphill through the birches and lay my lips against its moss. I glance sideways at Patricia. Her eyes are bright with tears. Patricia is the Lady of the Island and for it she has done a beautiful thing. Years ago she bought this lovely wild place, covered with birches, poplars, cedars and ferns, and then she let it alone. No attempt was made to clear it or turn it into park or garden, and when the buildings for her camp were made, only the most needed paths were cut, and the woods were left much as she found them. Jan Smuts was lauded as the first successful general of the Allies in the war; as "the general in whom the whole Empire has most confidence"; as "the destroyer of the German power in Africa"; as "the most conspicuous figure in greater Britain"; and as "a remarkable combination of talents not usually found in the same person, unless, indeed, that person belongs to the small and select class of which the Caesars, the Cromwells, and the Napoleons are the outstanding types." His character was described as "too spacious and complex to be read offhand." In an article in the press Mr. Winston Churchill wrote: "At this moment there arrives in England from the outer marches of the Empire a new and altogether extraordinary man . . . The stormy and hazardous roads he has travelled by would fill all the acts and scenes of a drama. He has warred against us well we know it. He has quelled rebellion against our own flag with unswerving loyalty and unfailing shrewdness. He has led raids at desperate odds and conquered provinces by scientific strategy . . . His astonishing career and his versatile achievements are only the index of a profound sagacity and a cool, far-reaching comprehension . . ." And while introducing him to the Imperial War Cabinet, Mr. Lloyd George referred to him as "one of the most brilliant generals in this war." COMPLETE SET OF 5 LOUIS WESSELS COMMANDO BOOKS REGULAR US$64.50 - SET US$ 54.83
The Louis Wessels Commando #1 A wonderful historical novel in which Penning has interwoven love, pathos, and loyalty. The conflict the Boers endure with England involves not only a fight to maintain their independence (to which the British agreed in 1881) but also a deep religious significance. Louis Wessels, eldest son of a well-established Transvaal Boer family, is betrothed to Truida, a Boer maiden living in the British colony of Natal, and educated in British-governed schools. When England sends over thousands of troops to invade the independent Boer colony of the Orange Free State, causing the Boers of the Transvaal Colony to prepare to invade Natal, the two lovers are confronted by more than a political conflict two loyal hearts separated by loyalty to conflicting causes. The horrors of the war drag both Louis and Truida through heights of joy and depths of despair. How can these two hearts, beating strongly for each other but also strongly for their separate causes, ever be reconciled? On which side is justice to be found? Time: 1899 Age:11-99 ISBN 1-894666-91-7 US$12.90
The Louis Wessels Commando #2 A company of twenty-five horsemen with an officer in command galloped into the yard. They jumped down, fastened their horses to the young fig trees which bordered the broad driveway, and in silence awaited orders from their commanding officer. He carefully scrutinized the terrain and set out five soldiers as watchmen. Five others were ordered to make a thorough search of the barn. Ten were posted at the various exits from the house and with the remaining five the officer entered the livingroom . . . "Do you have a Boer from the Transvaal hiding here?" asked the officer. "If I should deny it, you wouldn't believe me in any case, Lieutenant." Time: 1900 Age:11-99 ISBN 1-894666-92-5 US$12.90
The Scout of Christiaan de Wet by Lawrence Penning The Louis Wessels Commando # 3 It is the year 1900 and the Boer War continues to ravage the South African Free State and Transvaal. The English are relentless in their attacks and pernicious in seeking to achieve political power. But the Afrikaners refuse to submit and continue the struggle to maintain their freedom. Louis Wessels, the young hunter, and the Dutchman Jan Tromp, despite skirting danger, falling into traps, confronting traitors, hiding and escaping, slowly achieve their mission as they transverse the Transvaal as scouts for General Christiaan de Wet. Yet when they are finally trapped with no seeming escape, they meet an old acquaintance. Even though these dedicated Afrikaners are surrounded by the horrors and ravages of war there is time for laughter at Blikoortjes exploits, and time to receive encouragement from loved ones. Still the cry continues to rise to heaven, "How many people will still have to give their lives to restore freedom to South Africa? Will freedom truly be achieved?" Another exciting story from Piet Prinss favourite boyhood author. Time: 1900 Age: 11-99 ISBN 978-1-894666-93-0 US$12.90
The Louis Wessels Commando # 4 The commando of Louis Wessels continues to roam the South African countryside, joining whichever division needs them most. But defeat and loss, ruin and devastation seem to be the order of the day. Blikoortje and Jan Potgieter are captured, Wonderfontein is pillaged and ruined, and the church is desecrated. The ravages of this ghastly war are pressing in on all sides and the reality of total defeat looms large in all its starkness. The English Minister Brodrick had declared in the British parliament that "never but never had a more civilised war been waged!" Yet all the evidence showed the English army to be full of wantonness, lustful pillaging, savagery, destructiveness, and pitiless cruelty towards women, children, and the defenceless. Lawrence Penning gives a close up account of some of the events and issues surrounding the Boer War. The English declared they wanted the gold South Africa offered, but was there more at stake? This book, along with the others in the series, are great aids in coming to grips with the South African conflict in a fascinating manner. Time: 1900 Age: 11-99 ISBN 978-1-894666-94-7 US$12.90
The Louis Wessels Commando # 5 After three years of fighting, the Boer War was nearing its bitter end. Even though the Boer armies seemed defeated by the superior British armed forces, many Boer commandoes refused to give up and continued to strike at the English military. The enemys retaliation was horrible. Systematically the Rednecks combed out the country: farms were burned and the women and children were taken to concentration camps. Malnourished, neglected, and ravaged by Typhus fever, thousands died in those camps. Under the leadership of Louis Wessels, a commando planned a rescue, but with difficulties and traitors abounding, failure and capture were imminent realities. Was escape still possible? Could comfort be found in the words of the field preacher who not only condemned Englands insults and scorn heaped on the Boer entreaties for help, but also entreated his fellow Christians to throw dust and ashes on their heads "for we and our fathers we have sinned grievously! We have erred. We have served alien gods, and now the Lord is visiting us with His scourge." Addressing the Boers, and also the British doctor, the field preacher concluded, "Brothers, let us be silent in this oppression. Let us confess our sins and lift our penitent hearts in prayer to the hills from whence our salvation will come." This last volume of the Louis Wessels Commando series brings the dark reality of the Boer War into stark focus. May the words of the field preacher never need to be addressed to us. A Biography Abraham Kuyper was one of Hollands foremost leaders in politics, education, and the church from 1865 to 1917, a period of over 50 years. His influence is still felt today in his native land and in many other countries. Kuyper is unique in that he carried on parallel careers in separate major fields, both as a thinker and as a doer. He carried a sword in one hand and a trowel in the other, for he was both a builder and a battler. His followers loved him with warm, undying devotion, while his enemies hated him as they hated no one else. This biography, which is aimed at the general reader, gives us a running account of Kuypers 83 years on earth. It outlines his personal history and sketches the background whenever the scene shifts to a new phase in Kuypers many-sided career. My Life as Peasant, Officer, and Exile Commander of the Russian Womens Battalion of Death As set down by Isaac Don Levine Read by Theresa Janssen WWI Memorial Series 1 One morning I went to the post office to ask for mail. "There goes Botchkareva!" I heard a man cry out. "Ah, Botchkareva! She is for the old regime!" another fellow replied, apparently one of the Bolshevik soldiers. There were several of them and they flung threats and insults at me. I did not reply but returned home with a heavy heart. Even in my own town I was not safe. "My Lord," I prayed, "what has come over the Russian people? Is this my reward for the sacrifices I have made for my country?"

Precious Memories Series
In an area surrounded by the big woods of Wisconsin, the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Walnut Grove and Plum Creek, and the prairies of south Dakota, a new generation of faith settled in to till the earth and subdue it. These were the days of the first automobile, the introduction of electricity, gas furnaces (that had the tendency to explode), and world wars. Carol Brands has depicted a very accurate account of the true story of Katherine, a country girl, whom God in His providence granted the opportunity to pass on precious memories for countless generations to come. It is our task to take up the baton and carry on this wonderful work. You and your children will thoroughly enjoy the stories as they are read out loud, or read in the quiet of a comfortable chair. Perhaps these stories will even inspire an excursion to join many others in visiting places such as Rock Rapids in Iowa, and Leota and Magnolia in Minnesota. Take the time to explore De Smet in South Dakota and Walnut Grove in Minnesota. RELIVE LIVING HISTORY so that children (and their parents too) understand times past to be a blessing in times present - for the glory of God!

A Story of World War II and the Floods of 1953 "That's a rather rough expression, brother Melse `traitor.' How could you call someone a traitor if he's simply obeying the government? I would rather not hear such language from the mouth of an elder." "I maintain that such work as building bunkers is treason against our land," repeated David Melse. "The bunkers have a definite purpose: when armies come to liberate us from the power of the Germans, the bunkers are supposed to hold them back. Each bunker could help sink one of the naval vessels approaching our coast. And on those vessels are our friends perhaps even our own soldiers. Reverend, you should think carefully what those bunkers represent." Rev. Verhulst shook his head. "You people have completely the wrong idea about those bunkers. Do you really believe that Germany will one day sink to its knees before England? If you do, you're completely mistaken, brother Melse. Germany will take control of all of Europe and will never let itself be overthrown. Germany is much too powerful to be defeated. Moreover, if you had listened carefully to last Sunday's sermon, you would know full well how I think about these matters. The apostate covenant people spent seventy years in the grip of Babylon, and I'm sure that our time under foreign domination will not be any less. by Paulina M. Rustenburg Bootsma WWII Memorial Series 6 Fay S. Lapka in Christian Week: [This book] . . . is the fictionalized historical account of the actual village of Never Thought Of (literal translation of Nooitgedacht) in the Netherlands, and the efforts of the tiny, two-farm town to aid the resistance. This is a thoroughly interesting, at times warmly-amusing story, that will be enjoyed by adults. The photographs reproduced throughout the text add realism to the amazing story. A Story of Korea in World War II WWII Memorial Series 7 Bruce Hunt (1903-1992), an American Presbyterian missionary working among Koreans, narrated his experiences in Manchuria during the Second World War, when he was imprisoned by the invading Japanese. Maltreated, half-starved, tormented, released, re-arrested, cast greatly upon God he was brought through to the praise of divine grace. But what inspires the reader is the authors burden for the Korean Christians, who loved not their lives unto death. The account of their consistency under persecution is a great encouragement to missionary endeavour. Edward J. Young of Westminster Seminary wrote: "The Rev. Bruce F. Hunt is a highly respected missionary of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Born in Korea, he has spent practically his entire life in that country preaching the unsearchable riches of Jesus Christ. His devoted labours have been deeply blessed of God. In the present book his love to Christ shines forth on every page. This is not an ordinary book but here is the fascinating account of one who, even in severe trial, was faithful to his Lord. It is a book that all Christians should read, and if non-Christians would read it, they might come to understand the secret of such a life." Time: 1940-1960 Age: 14-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-082-0 (IP 17019) US$12.90

Things We Couldnt Say by Diet Eman & James Schaap The true story of a love stronger than Nazi persecution. Dr. K. Sietsma, the author of The Idea of Office (a book that everyone should read), and The Self-Justification of God in the Life of Job (prophetic sermons preached about five years before he experienced something like Job in Dachau in 1942) was not the only member of the Sietsma family who died in Dachau. His nephew Hein died in the same place. Dr. J. Faber wrote about Diet Emans book (the fiancé of Hein): The striking aspect of this book is that it testifies to Gods faithfulness . . . I heartily recommend it not only to my contemporaries among Dutch immigrants but also to their children and grandchildren. ["One of the best war-books I ever read!" (Place order for set of 5 and save 15%) SET OF 5 SHADOW SERIES - REG. 64.75 - PRINS, PIET - set of new copies US$ 50.55 One of the most exciting series of a master story teller about the German occupation of The Netherlands during the emotional time of the Second World War (1940-1945).K. Bruning in Una Sancta about Vol.4 - The Partisans, and Vol. 5 - Sabotage: . . . the country was occupied by the German military forces. The nation's freedom was destroyed by the foreign men in power. Violence, persecutions and executions were the order of the day, and the main target of the enemy was the destruction of the christian way of life. In that time the resistance movement of underground fighters became very active. People from all ages and levels joined in and tried to defend the Dutch Christian heritage as much as possible. The above mentioned books show us how older and younger people were involved in that dangerous struggle. It often was a life and death battle. Every page of these books is full of tension. The stories give an accurate and very vivid impression of that difficult and painful time. These books should also be in the hands of our young people. They are excellent instruments to understand the history of their own country and to learn the practical value of their own confession and Reformed way of life. What about as presents on birthdays?

by Queen Wilhelmina of Orange Nassau This book was written exclusively for my countrymen, both in our homeland and abroad. You might compare it with a long intimate letter to the Dutch people as members of one big family, with many years experience in common. The reactions I received proved unmistakably that my countrymen understood it in this way. Last October I was astonished to receive requests from publishers in different countries who proposed to translate and publish my book. You will realize that I needed a long time to consider my answer. However, in Chapter 5 you can read how I became a world Citizen in the spiritual sense (and in the preceding chapters I have tried to make clear the underlying concept of universal Christianity). This conviction prompted me to give my consent. I trust the foreign reader will realize that this book was never intended to become a part of world literature. A Story of the Cold War Tresham looked at the picture accompanying the article and might have been gazing into a mirror, so startling was the resemblance. "Of course, it is my brother," he said slowly. "So he went to Canada to work for a capitalistic state and help to start another war. What do you want me to do, since I suppose my coming here has something to do with that item in the newspaper?" The Russian nodded and handed him a cutting from a newspaper pasted on a piece of stiff cardboard. "Read that also," he said. It was a report of a later address given by Treshams brother in Washington to an organization affiliated with the United Nations and called "The Society for the Promotion of World Peace and Good Will." "The first two paragraphs are all that you need read at present," said Vasiloff. The report was in English with a Russian translation beside it. To All Our Children by Albert van der Mey The Story of the Postwar Dutch Immigration to Canada "Although they didnt show it, they were afraid. The only English word they knew was potato. My grandfather had said they were going to hell and would never come back. And he cried, with his face buried in his arm against the stable wall." "Uppermost was the question, Will I ever see them again? " "Uncle Tom, smiling, said, If we will not see each other on earth again, well meet in heaven. I smiled too, and a little ray of sunshine entered my heart." "So she decided to pull on a little rope that was hanging there. Within two minutes, the train was motionless; she had pulled the emergency brake!" "We used every cardboard box we could find for insulation to keep the wind out." " Don t kill him! Dont kill him! These words still ring clearly in the mind of Berend Kraal. They are a reminder of the agony of his introduction to the hard work on the farm and the overbearing attitude of his boss when he learned that Kraal didnt even know how to milk a cow properly." In the fifteen years following the end of World War II, thousands of Dutch people waved goodbye to their families, friends, past lives and possessions, boarded a ship, and made the long voyage to Halifax, Quebec City, or Montreal, where they disembarked as landed immigrants to Canada. Most of them had little or no idea of where they were going or what they would find when they got there. Still, they came. Between 1946 and 1982 more than 180,000 people emigrated from The Netherlands to Canada. That enormous tide peaked in 1952, when almost 21,000 Netherlanders made Canada their home. The movement arose out of a long-occupied country whose citizens considered Canadians their liberators, out of tiny Hollands limited capacity for growth, and out of the uneasy political situation in Europe. The real result of the movement, the lives of the ordinary people who uprooted themselves to immigrate, is the subject of this overwhelming documentation. Told simply and movingly, this is the story of every immigrants experience, from the decision to leave and the journey itself to the arrival in Canada and the difficulties to be faced. A new language, poverty, homesickness the hardships were many. But the opportunities the freedom, the chance to stretch and grow compensated for hardship. Here are the simple and straightforward words and pictures of a cross section of immigrants who came to Canada, not just for themselves and their children, but because Canada was an ideal place, a country one could dedicate ones life to. Some were disappointed and returned to The Netherlands. Most stayed. They became Canadians, not because of birth, but by choice, their choice and Canadas choice. This is the tale of postwar Dutch immigration to Canada, a story as moving and terrible, as humorous and simple as life itself. To most of those immigrants, Canada was an unknown entity. However, despite their hardships, they became some of her staunchest citizens. Here, one of our most interesting ethnic groups speaks for itself. Time: 1946-1983 Age 10-99 ISBN 0-88815-100-4 US$39.90

It sure feels good, said Arnold, driving an old car to start my first campaign. Thats how many politicians have done it.Indeed, said Ronald, thinking of a story about the well-known preacher, Robert Schuller of Crystal Cathedral in California. Apparently, Rev. Schuller and his wife had begun their ministry, travelling in an old Volkswagenbus. They would park it at a street corner and he preached from the roof of the bus. Rev. Schuller was not known for orthodoxy, but his humble beginnings were certainly worthy of admiration. So this is your first campaign trip?Yes, apart from going door to door. I have signed up more than two hundred people locally. But several hundred more will be needed in order to win the nomination. Tony Van Pater said that if he had had three hundred more supporters, he would have won his nomination. Time: 2015 Age: 13-99 ISBN 978-1-77298-034-9 US$7.90 |
The Story of a Dutch Immigrant, his Country and his God What makes this work truly distinctive as an autobiography is its seamless blending of personal narrative with rich theological and philosophical insight, turning Hultinks life story into a testimony of Gods almight, glory, and honour. John Hultink was the first publisher of the Scout books, Journey Through the Night, and many more books today available from Inheritance Publications. This is his "autobiography." Dear Friends,
Thank you for looking at this page. As we are preparing our 40th anniversary Scout/Catalogue
(the Lord willing to be published in the Fall of 2025 the actual birth date of Inheritance Publications is November 14, 1987, when I picked up 2 boxes {containing about 300 of the 2000 books printed in Winnipeg} from the bus depot in Hamilton, Ontario, and sold the first copies at a bazaar in Smithville)
which will likely be delivered to your door in the following 5 years (our 20th anniversary Scout/Catalogue was published in 2006 and is still the most used catalogue today). As we are working on the new catalogue, we are updating (increasing!) prices which are not yet updated on our database or web sites yet. We will honour all prepaid orders, even when old prices are used. We appreciate any help in identifying broken links (and outdated prices).
